As an artist Selma Gürbüz, is quite different from her contemporaries. The roots of her work go back to a distant past. It is almost impossible to find resemblances of her work in any of current artistic trends. Landscapes, mountain peeks, seashores, apples, pears and nudes are totally irrelevant to her art world. It is as if she extracts her imaginary figures from the coffee remains in coffee cups, which inspire fortunetellers.

These creatures remind us of ghosts, fairies, guineas, which may come from the Mundus Elemantaris of old alchemists, from 1003 nights or from white and gray magic.Ferit EdgüP Dergisi, sayı 29, bahar 2003, sayfa: 134, 'Selma Gürbüz'ün Büyüler, Tılsımlar Ülkesinde Bir Gezinti'From April 1 through May 1, Gallery Apel is hosting Selma Gürbüz's exhibition entitled 'The Fairy and the Genie', which features her latest works. Living both in Istanbul and in Paris, Gürbüz has always been a traveler. Her art world is enriched by other cultures, which are certainly reflected in her works. Thanks to her strong sense of humour, mysticism and mischief can appear at the same time and start a game just like she plays with the colors black and white. In February 2004, she was one of the four invited artists of the curated exhibit `More Wind', which took place in Yokohama Portside Gallery, Japan. While her ' woolen gardens '' (kilims and carpets) were being installed in the gallery, she managed to produce two dimensional black shadow figures out of cardboard, which she later used in her performance at the opening of the exhibit, a video of this shadow play will accompany her black and white paintings and sculptures in Gallery Apel.
