“Reading Corner” has been one of Gallery Apel's most favorite themes. In order to mark the participation of Turkey as the “guest of honor” at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2008, Apel organized a “Reading Corner” exhibition in 2007. The use of earth, fiber and glass has been a part of the craft tradition in Anatolia for several thousand years. Examples such as vessels dating back to 6000-7000 BC can be seen in museums today. The Hittites used baked clay tablets for their cuneiform writing. It is interesting to note that, in time, writing was transferred from ceramic to paper which was manufactured with fiber from plants.

In 2005, Gallery Apel organized an exhibition titled "Neighbour", as a parallel activity to the 9th International Istanbul Biennial. Same year in November, Anadolu Kültür offered the Diyarbakır Arts Center (DSM) for hosting the exhibition for the second time. "Neighbour" had to be adapted to the new environment with a few changes.

“Cup” happens to be the 50th of all the thematic shows with many artists, organized by Gallery Apel in Turkey and in abroad since 1998. As a part of the conversation about a broken pot in the gallery, the artist Yıldız Şermet explained how she fixed her cup with wires, and this became our inspiration for the subject.

Every fountain is an artifact. Perhaps one of the first interventions made into nature. Always choosing the vicinity of water sources for their settlements, humans counted water as sacred and attributed special importance and meaning to fountains, which they placed in public areas. Fountains appear as an indispensable element in the ancient civil and religious architecture of Anatolia, and have inspired practitioners of other branches of art as well.

The Hittites used baked clay tablets for their cuneiform writing. It is interesting to note that, in time, writing was transferred from ceramic to paper which was manufactured with fiber from plants.
