Drawing the themes of its exhibitions from everyday life, this time Gallery Apel invites viewers to its exhibition 'Balcony'. In our day, balconies come in different shapes and functions. They are important architectural elements that can also create grounds for social turning points. Because of Istanbul’s intimate relation with the sea, it was inevitable that balconies would emerge over time.

Today, balconies have replaced the traditional oriel windows of the Ottoman era, which allowed one to see three different views at once while sitting inside.Besides the architectural use of the balcony, for a greater part of human history we also encounter unforgettable examples that are identified with the balcony in literature, theater, and other visual arts: William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet and Edouard Manet’s painting 'The Balcony' are the first that come to mind. The exhibition at Apel reflects, through its many associations, how the balcony in social life is connected to the relationships between interior and exterior, ground and height, and the public and private spheres. We would like to thank our artists for their valuable contribution.Endam Acar, Behiç Ak , Aydan Baktır, Sakine Çil, Sümbül Eren, Can Göknil, Aslımay Altay Göney, Esra Carus Gülaydın, Güler Güngör, Kurucu Koçanoğlu, Raziye Kubat, Suzy Hug Levy, Çiğdem Mahsunlar, Lerzan Özer, Leyla Sakpınar , Nevzat Sayın Emre Senan, Maria Sezer ,Yıldız Şermet, Gamze Taşdan, Bahadır Yıldız, Hande Varsat , Shirley Verette.
