For 15 years, in her studio and exhibitions, I have known and followed the works of Güler Güngör. Like all true artists, she pushes the envelope of content in her work (sculpture), and thus pushes forward the limits of the sculptural materials as well.
And she seems to disregard the distance she has covered, embarking on a fresh journey each time. Güler Güngör has always emerged victorious from this perilous adventure: Hats, acrobats, houses… the human beingl thrust from them… from wood to iron, from iron to concrete and then steel, and from there…Where? Isn’t this the vision, the proposal she offers with her new works – Today do you see yourself purely in steel? In the mirror of steel? What about our ancient mirror? The one that yesterday showed yesterday, that today shows today, and will be able to show tomorrow as well? Even if it shatters. Steel and mirror. The two together. Kneaded together. And where kneaded asking, interrogating, leaping ahead. Look at these sculptures. See them. Tomorrow, if that also means hope, Güler negotiates, with steel and mirror, another bend in her perilous journey.A virtual, false, indeed fraudulent universe? Is it still too soon to say?Or isn’t that too signaled by this mirror in steel and steel in mirror?Hulki Aktunç
