How can we represent something that has been represented before? How is an artist who has emigrated from his homeland recognized? According to others, what is contained in this recognition? Regardless of how an immigrant tries to define himself, he/she is perceived in light of his/her geographical position and cultural background.

This perception underlines the disciplines of 'Cultural Studies' such as Linguistics, History, Economics (socio-economic status), Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology. This exhibition should be viewed using this study. The show, as indicated by its title 'My Old Friend Ataturk,' is about the phenomenon surrounding Ataturk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey. Ataturk himself and his ideologies became a dogma in Turkey. Everything about him is protected by law, his ideology has been packaged and is unchangeable. What I tried to do in this show is take this phenomenon and analyze it using the cultural studies perspective and tried to re-represent an Ataturk whom we have accepted with his flaws and his virtues. From the time the Turkish Republic was founded and until his death in 1938, the Ataturk who intentionally didn't travel abroad, has been taken to another land and in doing so, this exhibit aims to outline one of many paths to a new concept of life, the beginning of a new century and the representation of something that has been represented before.CEM AYDOĞAN
