ever laden

In this first solo exhibition of hers in Turkey, Varsat explores the stories of Turkish women who pass their life laden with the social burden of obedience towards the repressive nature of gender politics in the patriarchal society. Many of the works in the exhibition gains life through the denotations conveyed by the large variety of materials they are made of.

The exhibition’s title is at once an allusion to the imposed duties of the traditional Turkish spouse which burden her much as a lifelong pregnancy would; and to the birth pangs suffered by the artist in the process of creation of her artistic work.Seeking herself a space of freedom in the contradiction formed by her submission to her traditional roots, and a critical awareness towards them risen by her education, Varsat expresses in her works what she can not say in daily life, hoping to lighten her load.
